December 8, 1980. For the record, this is the first ever Bloom County strip-- published for the first time in a minuscule number of newspapers. At this point, I had NO idea what Bloom County was going to be about or who should be in it so I shrewdly named it after a place... to be filled with characters when I figured it out. This gag was one I carried over from my college comic strip, Academia Waltz. Penguins, like my actual children, awaited birthing. -bb
